Warm-up & inbox testing

Restart a quiet newsletter without surprising your subscribers

Use a careful list review and a clear restart message after a long gap in sending.

By Ada from Venmail

When a newsletter has been silent for months, the first job is to restore context. People may have forgotten the brand, changed jobs or stopped wanting updates. A restart should make the subscription recognizable and make leaving easy.

Start with your records, not the Send button. Separate recent subscribers, older subscribers with a clear subscription history, unsubscribed contacts and addresses with no reliable source. Never add the last two groups just because they are available.

Prepare a considerate restart

  1. 1

    Review the source

For each contact, find the signup date and what they asked to receive. If those details are missing, leave the address out of the restart. Preserve previous opt-outs even if you changed software.

  2. 2

    Clean an exported copy

Use a spreadsheet or the free OpenRefine project to identify duplicate rows and empty addresses. Review proposed merges before applying them. Cleaning a row does not establish that the person wants marketing.

  3. 3

    Write a context-first email

Explain the gap briefly, say what will arrive next and provide an obvious unsubscribe route. Use the same recognizable brand and a monitored reply address. Avoid pretending the conversation never stopped.

  4. 4

    Start with a justified group

Send first to recent, clearly subscribed readers within your Venmail allowance. Review replies and failures before including older eligible contacts. Stop if the response shows that your expectation of interest was wrong.

A useful next issue matters more than a long apology. Prepare it before sending the restart so you can keep the frequency you promised. If you cannot maintain monthly updates, promise occasional updates instead and explain what will trigger them.

Start with Venmail's Free plan for basic email work and broadcasts. Check the current plan and your account's sending allowance before importing a list. A free workspace does not imply unlimited sending or access to every integration. Venmail

Before restarting

  • The audience has a documented subscription history
  • Previous opt-outs are excluded
  • The restart explains future frequency
  • Unsubscribe works in a test
  • A person reads replies
